Lewis Carroll & Alice

“This was charming, no doubt; but they shortly found out That the Captain they trusted so well Had only one notion for crossing the ocean, And that was to tingle his bell.”

Lewis Carroll, pseudonym of Charles Lutwidge Dodgson [born Jan. 27, 1832, died Jan. 14, 1898] English logician, mathematician, photographer, and novelist. He is especially remembered for Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland  & Through The Looking GlassHis poem The Hunting of The Snark and  his nonsense literature are extraordinary, filled with puzzles and mysteries.

On July 4, 1862, John Tenniel, the Punch magazine cartoonist, was commissioned to do the  illustrations for Alice. The book was published as Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland in 1865. The first edition was withdrawn because of poor printing & only a few  copies survive, thus it remains a legendary First Edition and one of the rarest books of the 19th century. The reprint was published for Christmas of the same year, but  dated 1866.

Through the Looking-Glass and What Alice Found There  1872; was actually published December 1871, a work as good as, or better than, its predecessor. Carroll’s little amusements for Alice Liddell and her friends were by the time of his centenary in 1932 some of the most popular, beloved & famous books  in the world. Illustrated by many, parodied and copied, filmed, cartooned and reprinted.

Alice  “Begin at the beginning,” the King said, very gravely, “and go on till you come to the end: then stop.”
― Lewis Carroll, Alice in Wonderland
