The 2/15 Australian infantry battalion had as its motto ‘Let enemies beware. ‘This AIF unit was formed in Queensland in May 1940, and over the next five years, fought in campaigns against the Germans and Italians in North Africa, and the Japanese in New Guinea and Borneo. The battalions heroism in the desert fighting it to Tobruk and El Alamein is legendary. When the 2/15th Battalion entered the Pacific war it soon adapted to the perils of jungle fighting and in the bitter battles at Finschhafen clearly demonstrated the superiority of the digger over the Japanese.
