She began her medical studies in her early 20s in England and in her second year the Great War began and she was thrown into the Fulham Military Hospital to work on military surgery. She was the first woman professor at Oxford University She helped to establish a medical school at the University of Western Australia, and undertook research and investigative work of major importance into the incidence and treatment of trachoma among the Aboriginal people of Northern Australia.
